Basics
You can craft any rune (except blood and soul) with pure essence, but you can only craft f2p runes with rune essence - the cost of these two shouldn't matter too much, but you'll want to make sure the essence you buy can be used for the runes you want to craft:

*If you choose to go the quickest route, and make money once you're 82 or 91 runecrafting, you should expect to see your XP rate/hour decrease significantly from the quickest options, but crafting valuable runes until 99 can be one of the best ways to have a great bank to start with in old school RuneScape.

If you decide to complete these quests, you'll only be 5 levels away from being to craft Astrals (my personal favorite), and 9 levels away from crafting nature runes.

You can start crafting runes at the ZMI altar at level one, and you'll be given a random assortment of runes based on your runecrafting level. The higher your rcing level, the more experience you'll gain per hour [see image above]. At level 99, you'll be making comparable XP to soul runes, but soul runes are recommended as they are more AFK and is much easier to hit it's cap XP/rate.
*Completing the Medium Ardougne Diary boosts the number of runes crafted by about 15%
Crafting Lava Runes: Levels 23 - 77 [70K+ xp/hour]

*Fire runes are included because if you want fast XP without having to complete lunar diplomacy and bring talismans, you can still craft fires for the 2nd best RC XP in the game.
Lava runes are the quickest XP in the game in terms of runecrafting, and nothing comes even close to the max XP rate you can get from these in an hour. The downside to these runes, and hence why so little craft them, is because it's the most click intensive method of RCing - [70K+ XP/hour]
If you haven't completed lunar diplomacy, you'll have to click even more for having to bring earth talisman, alongside a binding necklace; both of which are required/recommended to craft lava runes.
If you've completed the lunar quest, you can use the magic imbue spell (level 82: 2 astral, 7 fire, 7 water runes). This spell allows you to make combination runes such as mist, dust, mud, smoke, steam, and lava - without having to bring a talisman. If you use a steam battlestaff, then you'll only need 2 astral runes per cast.
*At level 77 you can start crafting at the Zeah altar, which is good AFK XP. You'll need Arceuus favor before you can start mining the dark essence there.
Crafting Law Runes: Levels 54/75 - 77 [800K - 820K GP/hour] [15K - 27K XP/hour]
